Deadfall Trail is one of the best indie psycho-dramatic horror flicks of 2009. The cast includes three budding actors in the lead roles; Slade Hall, Cavin Gray Schneider, and Shane Dean. The film was shot in the desert of Tempe, Arizona. It was directed by the singled named director, Roze.
Roze was the director, producer, and one of the co-writers for this independent film. What makes this an intriguing piece of work is that it could be a remake of the block office hit, Deliverance. It has an obscene amount of nudity, graphic imagery, profanity and violence which all lend to the R-rating it rightfully deserves.
In the beginning of the movie, the three main characters, John, Julian, and Paul start off on a three week survival adventure in the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona. This trip is definitely not about having fun or filled with any luxuries. The requirements are that each boy only brings a hunting knife, one bottle of water to drink, and a single plastic garbage bag. The survival of each individual will solely be determined by their ability to live off of the land and their environment, their strength, their instincts, and their wits.
At the beginning of the adventure, the personalities of the three boys begin to show immediately. John, being that he has survived a similar trip, emerges as the leader. Julian, who has also shared a similar experience with John, acts as his second in command. It is Paul's first time attempting any type of trip like this. He is excited but his lack of expertise troubles Julian. John is confident that Paul is up to the task.
During the beginning of the trip, everything seems to go as planned. Paul's confidence, despite his inexperience, leads to some troubling situations but nothing too serious that the boys cannot handle. Julian grows increasingly angry at Paul but John manages to keep them all from losing their cool.
Paul has only agreed to risk his life on a three week survival hike in the desert for one reason. That reason is a small cactus plant called peyote. When ingested, the effects of the plant resemble psychedelic drug. It also makes a person thirsty. Because they only have three bottles of water, Julian and John urge Paul to wait to take the drug until they can find a better water source. Paul does not heed his friends' advice.
As with all horror films, things begin to horribly wrong. This flick is no different. The boys take the peyote and all kinds of weird cryptic events begin to occur. The movies moves along at a smooth pace and the characters begin to grown on the viewer, leaving the viewer anxious to see who is going to be the survivor, or if there is going to be any survivors.
Deadfall Trail is a pretty good movie. It may never me the criteria to be considered one of Hollywood's great horror movie classics. However, it is a well written and intriguing film. The acting is up to par and the characters are well developed. It is a movie that teenage boys and young adult males will definitely enjoy. It is entertaining and perfect for movie night. - 40724
