When Stephen King wrote the novel, The Shining, he was likely not aware of what a true terror masterpiece it would be. This book had millions of people terrified to be alone in the dark. This terror became even more intense when the movie came out during the early eighties.
The movie came out during the spring and continued its reign of terror way into the summer months. People were so involved in the storyline that they began repeating the memorable phrases. At the end of the year the academy presented the movie with several nominations and even an award.
Much like the book, the flick revolved around the lives of Jack Torrance and his family. He spent years battling alcoholism and decided that a change may do his wife and son some good. He accepts a job as caretaker in a hotel that is closed during the winter months. What the family does not know is that they are about to experience more horror than they could even imagine.
Young son Danny had dreams about the haunted hotel for months before the family ever moved there. He sensed that there was evil emitted from every wall in the building. This was confirmed within days of moving in with his family.
This film could not have been the success that it was without the presence of actor Jack Nicholson. He lit up the screen and terrified audiences with his sullen personality and evil antics. Some even began believing that the man was truly this terrifying person in his portrayal.
Memorable highlights
The film had many moments worth remembering. Some of these sent chills up audience member's spines. Others simply filled their nights with vivid dreams of the ever present evil.
One memory evoking phrases of the film has to be the young son, Danny, repetitious phrase redrum. This was murder spelled backwards and was repeated by the youngster after going into a hypnotic trance. It was not only disturbing to his young mother, but sent chills up many viewers' spines.
Another very scary moment during the flick was when young Danny was riding his bike through the halls of the grand hotel. He soon encounters two young twin girls standing at the end of a passageway. It did not take the boy long to realize that these children were not of this world.
Soon after encountering the ghostly girls in the upper hall, the young boy wanders into a room where he finds an even more horrifying sight. An old woman who had died in the bathtub was waiting to attack him. When his father investigated the happening he found an attractive young lady who was ready to seduce him. After that moment Jack became evil and set out to hurt his beloved family.
Evil began taking over the man's body and he soon became quite sinister. His wife and son began to worry about him and it was not long before they realized that he meant to kill them. This is evident when he takes an ax and busts through their bedroom door. A chase ensues and the movie comes to a climax.
The Shining offers up an extreme amount of terror to those who watch it. The movie is classic horror at its finest and is not reliant on the amount of gore that comes with newer flicks. Anyone who is planning on seeing it should be aware of the nightmares that will follow. - 40724
